I. — The Beginning

NOT A FACTORY.
NOT A STORE.
A PLACE WHERE TIME MOVES DIFFERENTLY.

Inside the Masantara Oud workshop, nothing is hurried. The agarwood chips that arrive from the forests of Kalimantan and Papua are treated the same way they have been for centuries — with patience, discernment, and a reverence for what nature has spent decades creating.

Every piece is assessed by hand. Every batch is distilled by instinct. Every oil is released only when it’s ready.

This is not production. This is practice. A daily ritual of transformation — where the discipline of the craftsman and the patience of the material meet to produce something that cannot be rushed, automated, or replicated at scale.

Masantara Workshop Philosophy
"The oud does not rush. Neither do we."

II. — Workshop Philosophy

THREE PRINCIPLES.
ONE STANDARD.

01
No Shortcuts
The minimum always exceeds what is necessary.
The minimum time an agarwood piece rests before assessment: 48 hours. The minimum time between distillation and testing: three days. The maximum batches processed simultaneously: four. Not because we cannot do more — because more would mean less.
02
The Material Decides
We listen to what the wood already carries.
Our craftsmen do not impose a scent on agarwood. They listen to what the wood already carries — its origin, its age, its resin density — and work with it, never against it. The oil reveals itself. We simply create the conditions for it to do so.
03
Every Hand Counts
What machines cannot measure, hands have always known.
There are no automated processes in the final stages of Masantara production. Grading, sorting, quality assessment, and packaging are performed by craftsmen who have trained for years to recognize the living quality of genuine oud — a quality that instruments approach but cannot capture.

III. — Behind the Craft

FROM FOREST TO OIL —
THE JOURNEY OF ONE BATCH

What you experience as a single drop of oud is the result of weeks of deliberate process. This is what happens before that drop exists.

I
Arrival & Assessment
The Wood Speaks First

Every incoming agarwood shipment is assessed before it enters the workshop. Our lead craftsman examines each piece — its color, density, resin formation, and aroma signature — before a single piece is accepted into the production flow. Rejected pieces go back. No exceptions.

II
Grading & Sorting
Classification by Instinct

Agarwood is graded not just by appearance, but by feel, weight, and aroma profile. Each grade tells a different oil story — different depth, different projection, different character. Our grading table is where batches are born. The process cannot be shortened without losing its meaning.

III
Preparation & Soaking
The Slow Awakening

Selected pieces are prepared and soaked — a process that unlocks resin pockets and prepares the wood structure for distillation. Duration varies by grade and origin. Some woods require 12 hours. Some require three days. The wood tells us when it's ready.

IV
Steam Distillation
The Transformation

Steam distillation — the same method used for centuries — draws the essential oil from within the wood. Temperature, pressure, and time are managed by hand, by eye, and by experience. No digital automation. No shortcuts. A single high-grade batch requires 24 to 72 hours of continuous, monitored distillation.

V
Quality & Release
The Final Judgment

The extracted oil rests before testing. Then it is assessed — aroma profile, color depth, viscosity, and longevity — by our senior taster. Only oil that meets the Masantara standard is bottled and released. What doesn't meet the standard is reworked. Or respectfully set aside.

The Masantara Oud distillation process follows traditional methods refined over generations. Steam-distilled. Hand-monitored. Released only when the oil is ready — not when the schedule demands it.

IV. — The Material

NOT ALL AGARWOOD IS THE SAME.
NOT EVEN CLOSE.

The character of every Masantara oil begins in the specific forest, altitude, and ecosystem that produced the agarwood. We source from three primary Indonesian origins — each with a distinct voice, a distinct story.

V. — Heritage & Origin

A PRACTICE OLDER THAN
THE WORD “FRAGRANCE.”

Agarwood has been revered in the Indonesian archipelago for more than a thousand years. Long before it became a luxury commodity, it was burned in the homes of sultans, offered in royal ceremonies, and traded along routes that connected Java to Arabia, from Borneo to Persia.

The knowledge of how to work with it — how to recognize quality, how to distill without violence, how to respect the wood — was passed between generations the way important things always have been: quietly, and in person.

The Masantara Inheritance

WE ARE NOT REINVENTING
THIS TRADITION. WE CONTINUE IT.

With the same respect for material, the same unhurried approach, and a commitment to quality that ancient practitioners would recognize as their own. Our workshop in North Sumatra sits at the intersection of this ancient practice and a modern understanding of global fragrance.

We know what the world wants. We know what the forest provides. The craft is finding where these two truths meet — and holding that place with integrity, season after season.

IX. — From Workshop to You

EVERY PRODUCT IN OUR COLLECTION
WAS MADE IN THIS ROOM.

What you purchase from Masantara Oud is not a manufactured fragrance. It is the result of a specific batch, from a specific origin, processed by specific hands, on a specific day.

This traceability is not a marketing claim. It is the nature of how we work — small batches, full documentation, zero anonymization of the production chain.

When you ask us about your oud, we can tell you which craftsman assessed it, how long it was distilled, and which forest it came from. Most suppliers cannot say that. We can.

VIII. — Workshop Atmosphere

"We have visited oud workshops in Oman, the UAE, and Thailand. Masantara is different. There is a depth of knowledge here that you cannot purchase or replicate. It is earned. And it shows in every bottle."

"For our bespoke fragrance programme, we needed a partner who could explain every decision. Masantara can — and does. The transparency is exceptional."
— Hospitality Director · Luxury Property · Singapore
"The oil I received tells a story. I know what forest it came from. I know who made it. For a serious collector, that matters as much as the scent itself."
— Private Collector · London, UK
"We have worked with suppliers across Southeast Asia. The quality control and documentation integrity at Masantara is at a different level entirely."

XI. — Frequently Asked Questions

QUESTIONS WE ARE
ASKED MOST OFTEN.

What you experience as a single drop of oud is the result of weeks of deliberate process. This is what happens before that drop exists.

What makes Masantara Oud's workshop different from other Indonesian producers? +
The primary difference is our approach to process over volume. We deliberately limit batch sizes so that every piece of agarwood receives individual assessment. Our senior craftsmen have decades of experience, and every production decision is made by hand — not automated. We also maintain full documentation of every batch, meaning we can trace any product back to its specific origin, distillation session, and quality record. Most suppliers cannot offer this level of traceability.
Is it possible to visit the Masantara Oud workshop? +
Yes. Private visits are available by appointment and are designed for serious fragrance buyers, collectors, hospitality professionals, and researchers. A typical visit lasts between 2 and 4 hours and covers the full production process from material assessment to finished oil. Visits are conducted in English, Indonesian, and Arabic. Contact us to discuss scheduling and availability.
What agarwood origins does Masantara Oud work with? +
We source primarily from three Indonesian origins — Kalimantan (Borneo), Papua Wamena, and Maroke Papua. Each produces oils with distinct aromatic characters: Kalimantan is deep and resinous, Papua Wamena is complex and evolving, and Maroke is intensely animalic with extraordinary longevity. We also occasionally work with materials from other Indonesian islands when quality meets our acceptance standard.
How long does the distillation process take? +
Duration varies significantly by grade and batch composition. A standard commercial grade batch may be distilled in 18–24 hours. A high-grade or premium collector batch can require 48 to 72 hours of continuous, monitored distillation. We do not rush the process for any grade level — the oil is ready when it is ready, not when the calendar demands.
Can I commission a custom oud or bakhoor blend from the workshop? +
Yes. Private commission work is a core part of our offering for qualified buyers. The process begins with a consultation, proceeds through a sensory profiling session, and results in a bespoke formula exclusive to the commissioning client. Formula exclusivity is documented in the supply agreement. Contact us for full details of the private commission process.
Does Masantara Oud provide CITES documentation? +
Yes. All products derived from CITES Appendix II agarwood material are shipped with the appropriate government-issued export documentation. We maintain full legal compliance with Indonesian forestry regulations and international trade law. Documentation is provided as standard for all relevant orders — not as an add-on or special request.
What are the minimum orders for wholesale or B2B supply? +
Minimum orders vary by product category. For consultation on wholesale pricing, B2B supply agreements, or OEM manufacturing, please contact our business team directly. We work with fragrance brands, hospitality groups, and distributors across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Every partnership begins with a conversation.
